Introduction

GeoAI4EI develops an open-source, trustworthy, and ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) toolbox to strengthen European and global epidemic intelligence (EI) for pandemic preparedness and response.

Building on the Horizon 2020 MOOD platform and state-of-the-art geospatial and epidemiological modelling, GeoAI4EI integrates multi-source data with advanced AI — including Large Language Models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented conversational assistants — to support early detection, monitoring, and scenario-based management of high-risk pathogens, including zoonotic spillovers and climate-driven threats.

The toolbox is co-produced with researchers, public health agencies, policymakers, and supranational bodies (ECDC, HERA, WHO), and is designed from day one around ethical and legal safeguards: GDPR-compliant data handling, EU AI Act alignment, FAIR & CARE principles, and independent ethical audits.

What GeoAI4EI does

  • Early detection of emerging and re-emerging disease signals across multi-source data
  • Continuous monitoring of high-risk pathogens in time and space
  • Scenario-based management to support preparedness planning and response decisions
  • Decision support for public health agencies and policymakers across Europe and associated countries
info

GeoAI4EI contributes to global health security through equitable, ethical, and sustainable digital innovation, and ensures interoperability with EU infrastructures such as the EHDS and ATHINA.
